EP45: Mike Robbins: The Invisible Loss of Identity: Losing a Pro Baseball Career to Becoming An Expert Speaker

In today’s episode, I’m happy to introduce you to Mike Robbins. Mike Robbins is an author, thought leader and sought-after speaker who teaches people, leaders, and teams to infuse their lives and businesses with authenticity and appreciation. His clients include some of the biggest companies in the world like Google, ebay, the NBA and many more.

In this conversation, Mike very candidly shares about some of the losses he has experienced in his own life. Specifically, we go into detail about some of what I call “invisible losses”, like the loss of identity, career, relationships, etc. Mike also talks about the loss of his father and sister and the experience of having a family member with significant mental health issues.

Mike was drafted by the New York Yankees out of high school. He turned the Yankees down and instead chose to play baseball at Stanford University, where he pitched in the College World Series. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals out of Stanford and played three seasons of professional baseball in the Royals organization before arm injuries ended his playing career while still in the minor leagues.

He talks about the loss of this identity and the experience that ultimately ended up catapulting him to the stage.

This conversation feels perfectly timed for the unprecedented times we are all moving through right now with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all experiencing and grieving multiple invisible losses all at once.

“This is a moment for authenticity. This is a moment for being human. It’s uncomfortable, AND there’s an opportunity for us to learn and grow if we choose it.” (Click to tweet!)

This is a moment of great change and collective grief. It’s also an opportunity, on the other side of this, to Reenter Life as a new version of ourselves.
